When you get a chance to wager on a guy with two first names, you have to do it. We get that chance today with Mr. Joe Ryan a guy the Twins have to be thrilled with. They acquired him in a deal for Nelson Cruz a few years back, and he’s ascended nicely through the Twins system.
The former water polo player led the minors in K rate in 2019, so it only seemed like a matter of time before he started striking out major leaguers. Joe seems to have put it together recently as he has hit this over in 5 of 6, and I will jump on the hot streak to see if he can do it again.
Joe is primarily a fastball pitcher. He throws his four seamer nearly 60% of the time, and pairs it with a slider that he throws 21.3% of the time. His fastball, although only 92 MPH, generates swings and misses at a 25.2% rate. His slider gets whiffs at a 29.4% rate. He will sprinkle change and curves here and there but they are less refined.
Overall, Joe’s K numbers have been pretty average. He is in the 48th percentile in K per inning, 55th in K rate, 48th in whiff rate, and 42nd in chase rate. He has a solid 23.6 K rate for the season. Where I get excited is when you look at how his K rate elevated as the season went on:
May: 18.9%
June: 15.7%
July: 24.8%
August: 27.2%
The Giants have been one of the better options to target throughout the season. They rank 11th in K per game and are coming off a game with 13 K. They are also much worse in away games where they strike out 9.1 times per game. They have a .217 team average and a 25.0% K rate over the last 30 days, so this should be a good opportunity for Joe to continue his hot streak.
