Another weekend of fantastic golf in the books. Sam Burns started Sunday, at the Charles Schwab Challenge, 7 strokes behind the leader. He finished at -9 as the final pairing was making the turn and one back from the lead. However, the lead did not stay there, wind and fast greens were the downfall of the rest of the field in contention, Burns was 1 of 12 players to finish under par.
His -9 was enough to force a playoff with Scottie Scheffler and he won it by draining a 38 footer for birdie from the fringe on the first playoff hole.
This is Burns 3rd win of the season, one back of Scheffler for wins this season and 4th of his career.
This week we are making this season’s only trip to Jack Nicklaus’ home state Ohio, to his course, and his tournament, the Memorial Tournament.
2022 Memorial Tournament Event Information
Date: June 2-5, 2022
Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, OH
Payout: $12,000,000
Defending Champ: Patrick Cantlay
The Memorial Tournament was started in 1976 by Jack Nicklaus and is played at Muirfield Village Golf Club, designed by the Golden Bear himself. The tournament is an invitational which is a smaller field with more flexibility in filling it. This often leads to a stacked field, which is evident when looking at past winners.
Last year’s tournament featured a bit of controversy, Jon Rahm, defending champ at the time, held a 6 stroke lead over the field through 3 rounds and was forced to withdraw, after testing positive for COVID-19.
What Course Is The Memorial Tournament Held At?
Muirfield Village Golf Club is located just outside of Columbus, Ohio, where Jack Nicklaus grew up. The course, designed by Nicklaus, is on the longer side at 7,533 par 72 and recently went through renovations completed last year, the greens and bunkers were rebuilt and length was added. There will be chances for scoring with drivable par 4s and par 5s you can reach in 2, if you can stay out of the rough so driving accuracy will be imperative this week.
