Wings vs. Sun Series Preview Odds, Picks & Predictions: Back the WNBA Best Sun

The WNBA regular season has come and gone, and now the playoff stage is set. Eight teams are in the playoffs, which start on Wednesday, August 17th. The first round matchups are below:

  • 1 Seed Aces vs. 8 Seed Mercury
  • 2 Seed Sky vs. 7 Seed Liberty
  • 3 Seed Sun vs. 6 Seed Wings
  • 4 Seed Storm vs. 5 Seed Mystics

One important scheduling note to make is that the first round series are a best of three, with the first two games hosted by the higher seed. What this means, though, is that if the lower seed forces a game three it will also be a home game for the lower seed in a do-or-die game.

In this article, we will be previewing the Wings taking on the Sun.

Wings vs. Sun Betting Preview

Although sportsbooks don’t list series odds specifically, the Sun are heavy favorites here. Despite this being a three seed vs. six seed matchup, these two teams are not close from a talent perspective.

Game one odds are posted, and we see the Sun as huge favorites, per the screenshot below.

While the Suns finished with the third seed, they were only one win below the top two seeds (Aces/Sky, who tied with 26 wins). In terms of net rating, though, the Sun are actually the highest rated team in the WNBA.

They finished the regular season as the top team in net rating overall, finishing second in both offensive and defensive net rating as well. Unsurprisingly, the Sun also had the best plus/minus in the WNBA, outscoring opponents by 8 points per game (PPG) on average.

The Sun were remarkably consistent whether they were at home or on the road, too. They finished as the number one team in net rating both at home and away, showing how well-rounded this team is.

They are led by Jonuel Jones and Alyssa Thomas, who finished first and second, respectively, in point differential on the Sun. With Jones on the floor specifically, the Sun outscored opponents by an average of 7.7 PPG.

So, looking at the Wings side of things, they obviously face a stiff test. While any of the top three seeds would have been strong opponents, it can be argued that the Wings are at a disadvantage over the seven or eight seeds because they were matched up with the Sun.

The Wings certainly aren’t a bad team, but they aren’t special either. They finished the regular season with a .500 record, going 18-18. They were middle of the pack in terms of net rating as well, finishing sixth out of 12 teams.

The guess here is that the Sun are able to come out and win their two home games with relative ease, advancing to the next round
