Sky vs. Wings Betting Preview

The Wings will face strong headwinds as they attempt to take flight against the Sky.

The two playoff contenders will faceoff for the first time this regular season on Saturday, July 16 at College Park Center in Dallas. The Dallas Wings will need this home-court advantage, as the Chicago Sky have been nearly unstoppable so far this season.

The Sky have won eight of their last nine games, climbing to an 18-6 record. Their only recent loss was a 81-78 game on July 6 against the surging Minnesota Lynx, who the Wings defeated 92-87 on July 14.

By the transitive property, the Wings should be feeling comfortable against the Sky, right? Not so fast. Bookmakers are predicting a slight edge for the Sky, but viewers can anticipate a hard-fought, high-scoring match.

Chicago Sky

The Chicago Sky have the best field goal percentage in the league at 47.9%. Defenses have a hard time targeting the Sky’s threats, because the whole team is a threat!

Six members of the Sky squad average more than 10 points per game, and you can never predict whose ‘night’ it will be. On July 12, Candace Parker became the oldest player in the WNBA to score 30 points and 10 rebounds in a game…then scored 0 points on July 14 while rookie Rebekah Gardner recorded the first double-double of her career.

This season, the Sky have had three types of games: Blow-out wins, narrow losses, and miracle victories snatched from the jaws of defeat. They are one of the most ‘clutch’ teams in the league, making it hard to ever bet against them. If they have a kryptonite, it has yet to be seen.

Dallas Wings

With a month left in the season, five teams have nearly secured playoff sports. Six teams are in the hunt for the remaining three spots. The Dallas Wings are leading this pack of teams. A win against the league’s top team would not only be a confidence booster, but help them secure a spot in the postseason.

The Wings offense is primarily built around Arike Ogunbowale, who averages 19.3 points per game. Ogunwale is frequently the team’s top contributor, and the Wings have lost every game that she hasn’t scored at least 16 points. The Wings do have some additional offensive support in Allisha Gray and Marina Mabrey, which will be sorely needed regardless of if Ogunwale can pull off two 30+ point games in a row.

This matchup will introduce some unknown dynamics between the two teams. While the Wings have not faced the Sky, they have lost both matchups against the Las Vegas Aces, who have a very similar stat sheet (high offensive rating, low defensive rating). The Wings have seen a matchup like this before, and it hasn’t gone their way.

Sky vs. Wings Betting Pick: Sky Moneyline | -175 at DraftKings

It’s hard to remember the last time the Sky were underdogs. They have been so dominant that most value bets lately have come from finding moments they are overhyped. This is not one of those cases.

Many sportsbooks have the odds near -200, which I think is appropriate. This is the first of a three-game battle between the Sky and Wings this season, and my money is on the Sky to win twice as much as they lose.

I would take the Sky to win at anything better than -180 odds.

Sky vs. Wings Bonus Betting Pick: Over 169.5 | -110 at DraftKings

The Chicago Sky and Dallas Wings are two of the top-scoring teams in the league. However, they are both pretty average teams when it comes to defense. My picking the Sky to win isn’t to say that the Wings won’t have a good game, but they will probably be slightly outscored.

I foresee the game being competitive to the end, and with both teams primed for a high-action game, it’s tough for me to recommend taking the under on anything less than 171.
