Serie A Matchday 3 Picks & Predictions

Monza vs. Udinese Pick: Over 2.5 | -121 on BetRivers

Friday, August 26 | 12:30 p.m. ET

Life in the Serie A has not been pleasant for newcomers Monza who have failed to collect a point in their opening two matches. After losing their home opener 2-1 to Torino, they went on the road to face off vs. a Napoli squad who were looking to improve on their third place finish last season. Monza hung in tough for a while eventually conceding in the 35th minute on their way to what was a 4-0 thrashing.

This fixture presents a perfect opportunity to collect their first points of the season as they welcome Udinese to the Brianteo as their schedule in the coming weeks proves to be a difficult one as they will encounter clubs like Roma, Atalanta, Leece and Juventus. Some room for optimism however is Monza’s home record in which prior to their loss to Torino, they had gone nine straight matches without defeat and had collected at least one goal or more in all 10 of those matches.

Udinese is an interesting team to get a read on. After narrowly escaping their Coppa Italia tie with a win over Feralpisalo they went into Milan and gave the Serie A champs a run for their money in what amounted to a 4-2 loss. What should have been a motivational loss heading into their tie in Matchday 2 vs. Salernitana surprisingly did nothing and resulted in a 0-0 draw.

Their failure to get on the scoresheet was the first time in their last nine matches dating back to last season Udinese did not record a goal. That consistency has translated onto the road; having scored a goal away from home in eight straight competitive matches. It is this consistency over a long period of time that suggests last week’s 0-0 draw is a rarity and not something to be too concerned about.

As both squads look to get their season heading in the right direction, we can be sure of a match in which both clubs go for the points. Their proven track records in the goals department should provide us with comfort that chances will arise and come the final whistle we will have cashed our Over 2.5 wager

Juventus vs. AS Roma Pick: AS Roma +0.25 | -121 on BetRivers

Saturday, August 27 | 12:30 p.m. ET

We have a battle of two heavy weights on the card for Saturday afternoon. Let’s just come out and say it; History has not been kind to Roma in this head-to-head match up. Juventus have won six of the last 10 matches between these clubs and nine of the last 10 when played at Allianz Stadium in Turin. So what gives?

Two rounds into the new season, both Juventus and Roma have done what we have expected (kind of). Juventus has kept two clean sheets to Sassuolo and Sampdoria while Roma have matched their opponent keeping both Salernitana and Cremonese off the scoreboard. In other words, we should expect a tight affair this afternoon.

With Roma coach Jose Mourinho pulling the strings, it’s easy to envision a Juventus side coming off a 0-0 draw begin to show a little frustration as they try to break through the defensive wall Roma will surely deploy.

It’s hard to suggest if Juventus are going through a little something at the moment. Dating back to the end of last season, Juventus have now won one of their last five Serie A fixtures. That poor form carried into their exhibition schedule winning only one of four and while collecting a 3-0 win Matchday 1, it wasn’t without their own concerns as they were out possessed by Sassuolo 58% to 42% and gave up 19 shot attempts ; seven of which were on target.

Roma showed great defensive structure leading into the campaign, giving up five goals in seven matches, and proceeding to carry that structure into their first two matches of the new season. Admittedly, their first two opponents are not at the level of Juventus, but you can hardly blame them for doing their job.

Not having lost any of their last six matches dating back to last season, Mourinho and his squad are showing an appetite for the Serie A championship and with key moves such as bringing in Paulo Dybala, there’s no reason to believe Roma doesn’t begin to turn around their poor history in Turin starting today.
