Two historic English clubs battle for the first match of the new calendar year. The Gunners welcome surprise package Newcastle to the Emirates Stadium where Arsenal will look to extend their 7-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table.

Not much has gone wrong for Arsenal so far this season, with the exception of star striker Gabriel Jesus going down with a long-term knee injury suffered at the World Cup while representing Brazil. There was a question mark surrounding the club and how they would respond to losing their focal point in attack.

The answer? They didn’t miss him. 

The Gunners have picked up back-to-back victories since the return to action, collecting 7 goals in the process. Everything is clicking for this squad; even more so when on home turf where they have secured wins in all seven of their Premier League fixtures played in front of the Arsenal faithful, scoring 22 times in those seven matchups. 

Newcastle presents a stern test for Arsenal, but history has been on their side in this tie, winning eight of the last 10 Premier League matchups and 10 of the last 10 when playing at home.

Newcastle have surprised plenty of people early on in the campaign. It feels like we have all been waiting for them to lose steam and slowly drop in the standings; we’re still waiting. Currently occupying the third spot in the table and liking their chances of participating in European soccer next season, they will be presented with what is likely their toughest challenge to date. 

While Newcastle won’t be able to look at history for any motivation, they can look to their away form, where they have lost only once from their nine away fixtures this campaign in all competitions. This includes five wins and three draws while finding the back of the net in seven of those nine.

Both squads are in top form, but the talent gap does remain. Arsenal have proven the loss of main striker Jesus hasn’t impacted them. Combining that with the continuity within the Arsenal squad and the management staff will surely ensure history repeats itself today at the Emirates; Arsenal will build their lead at the top and collect another 3 points.

Everton vs. Brighton Pick: Everton +0.25 |

Nobody wants to wager on Everton. The team is a complete disaster this campaign. Thirteen goals were scored in 17 fixtures; losers of three of their last five and they currently sit a mere point above relegation. But, we’re doing exactly that today and putting our money on Everton. There are not a lot of positives about this Everton squad, but we have seen some minor positive signs that give us confidence heading into today’s matchup.

Brighton have been one of the “feel good” stories in the Premier League this season, but it just feels like the shine is slowly wearing off. Brighton have won three of their last seven EPL matchups collecting wins over Southampton, Wolves and Chelsea (this being the furthest back of the three). None of which have been impressive over the course of the season.

Two wins from their last six away fixtures should seem like an impressive feat, but those two wins came against previously mentioned Southampton and the Wolves. There is no denying that Brighton have earned points with fans and bettors alike based on their early season form, but it’s hard to ignore the dropoff between then and now; even if they are collecting wins sparingly.

Everton have lost four of their last 10 matchups at Goodison Park, which hardly inspires any confidence. Still, we’re going to ride with the fact they just drew 1-1 with Manchester City last match day, while previously playing a recharged Wolverhampton squad tough in a 2-1 loss. I get it — it’s hard to back a team with so little to like about it. But when considering the drop-off in form from a Brighton side who looked like World beaters early on, and embracing the positive steps this Everton squad has taken in the last couple of matchups, there is value to be had.

Historically, this tie also favors Everton who have earned points in seven of the last 10 head-to-head ties; four of the last five, and four of the last five when played at Goodison Park. We’re being a little risky here siding with a team sitting at the bottom of the table, but as a wise man once said “scared money doesn’t make money.” Everton will collect at least 1 point; lock it in.
