The 2022 MLS Season is underway, and the race for the MLS Cup is shaping up to be a competitive one.
Will one of the major market teams in Los Angeles or New York take the crown again after NYC FC’s successful 2021 campaign, or will one of the long-standing teams regain its place atop the league?
There are some clear favorites and some potentially dangerous underdogs — but this early in the season, it’s still anyone’s game.
Between New York City FC and LAFC, I went with the more consistent of the two powerhouse teams.
At 14 games into the season, LAFC stands atop the entire league with 29 points and despite a couple recent losses, they don’t look to be surrendering that lead any time soon.
While the Galaxy don’t have the pedigree or the current record of their L.A. companions in LAFC, they’re 4-1-2 over the past month of play, and they’ve been heating up recently with dominant wins over LAFC and Austin FC.
While certainly not a sure thing to finish atop the division, the Galaxy are a strong dark horse pick with great odds for a confident bettor.
Despite being in second place in the Eastern Conference, and tied for third overall in the league, the Union are available at fantastic +1000 odds to win the MLS Cup.
The oddsmakers and money thus far are clearly seeing this as a two-team race between NYC FC and LAFC, and the Union could serve as a major spoiler this season and end up atop two of the league’s biggest franchises.
LAFC is too balanced of a team offensively and defensively to face much competition the deeper this season goes. Assuming they stay healthy, the MLS Cup should be theirs in 2022.
