The 2022-23 Bundesliga season is nearly upon us. Here are the storylines OddsJam’s soccer expert @FootyChancellor is eyeing this season, plus the futures bets he’s locking in now.
As I sit here in the Cologne airport ready to make the long journey back to the United States and Friday marks Bundesliga kickoff day, I can’t help but think what an incredible season this could be.
The Bundesliga has been a one-team league for many years, and I do not think that will change anytime soon. Dortmund looked to maybe have an outside shot this year but with the tragic news of Sebastien Haller being out to undergo chemotherapy, it really eliminates them.
Leipzig look to be the closest thing to competition that Bayern has this year. Union Berlin are my dark horse top-four squad if they can figure out how to win on the road. Adding American Jordan Pefok from Young Boys will only help the Union Berlin attack.
Realistically, there are only five teams that can compete for the four Champions League spots in the Bundesliga. There is always a squad that comes out of nowhere, but I am not expecting any major surprises.
Wolfsburg are just a fancy name now; Union Berlin may shock some people if they can learn to win on the road. But it will be Bayer Leverkusen headed back to the Champions League in the end.

I love everyone one of these plays. Leroy Sane (Bayern) is coming off a disappointing 7-goal season and went long stretches of terrible form. With key departures from Bayern, it is going to really open up play for all attacking players as we saw in the 5-3 win over Leipzig in the Super Cup.
Schick might be the best pure goal scorer in the Bundesliga this year. After netting 24 goals last season, he should repeat near that total and cash the over with ease.
Thomas Muller the man, the myth, the Bayern legend has an amazing 36 assists over the past two seasons. Muller has a chance to beat his career-best 21 assists on a season this year with all the fancy goal scorers around him. I love this plus money play.
Bayern should run away with the league, no question about that. Patrik Schick, however, is the focal point of a high-powered offense that will be competing for the Champions League again.
Schick finished second last season in scoring beating out some big-time names (Haaland 22, Nkunku 20).
Hertha Berlin might be the worst team in power leagues. They survived being relegated with a miracle playoff win at Hamburger to remain in the Bundesliga.
Berlin has done nothing to improve their squad this offseason and will be battling to stay up this year again. After letting in 71 goals (second-worst), things can only get worse from here bringing back the same lineup.
