Arizona Cardinals James Saxon on Administrative Leave – Facing Battery Charges

Arizona Cardinals running back coach James Saxon has been placed on administrative leave by the team. This taking place after an argument at an Indianapolis Costco on May 7 with a woman Saxon was visiting. The argument escalated once the pair returned home and Saxon pushed her with his forearm causing her to fall into the garage backwards in front of two young children who were also present.

The woman alleged that at one point during the argument, Saxon said, “You got your gun? You might as well just shoot me now!” Saxon is now facing two charges of domestic battery in connection with the incident.

He faces one misdemeanor and one level 6 felony charge, which is the lowest level felony in the state of Indiana. Indiana law requires felony charges in any case that the offense occurs in the presence of children under 16.

Saxon faces up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 regarding the misdemeanor. He faces up to 2.5 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for the felony charge. In total he is facing up to 3.5 years in prison and $15,000 in fines if he is convicted on the charges and given the maximum sentences.

His case remains pending until August 25 at which time an attorney conference can be convened and a trial date can then be set.

The Cardinals released this statement regarding the incident:

“We are aware of the incident and notified the NFL as required,” the Cardinals said in a statement on Friday. “The matter is currently under review pursuant to league policies. … We will have no further comment pending additional proceedings.”

Saxon continued to coach for the Arizona Cardinals until ESPN broke the news of the incident. It is being reported that Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury has said the team knew of the incident, “when it happened”.

When contacted for a statement, Saxon’s lawyer Carman M. Malone declined to comment, except saying she will vigorously defend her client citing the pending nature of the case.

Saxon has been an assistant coach in the NFL for 23 seasons as well as an NFL player for 8 seasons. During this time he played for three different teams. The Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, and Philadelphia Eagles. He has been with the Arizona Cardinals since 2019 when he was hired by current head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
