Clemson vs. Georgia Tech Odds, Picks & Predictions: Back Clemson in This Clear Talent Mismatch

The college football week 1 of bangers continues on with this ACC matchup between Georgia Tech and Clemson.

This is a home game for Georgia Tech, being played on Monday, September 5th at 8 p.m. ET. This will also be a nationally televised game, being broadcasted on ESPN.

Clemson, along with teams such as Ohio State, enters this 2022 season with a sour taste in their mouth from how the 2021 season went.

Clemson started their season last year with a loss to Georgia, which was a sign of things to come. They still finished with a respectable record of 10-3, but for Clemson that is a disappointment.

They had their streak of six straight ACC titles and six straight College Football Playoff appearances end last year.

If Clemson wants to return to the glory that they previously held for those six years, they are going to need quarterback DJ Uiagalelei to play significantly better than he did last year. He struggled in 2021 in his first year as the starting QB.

He had high expectations entering the season, as he is a former five-star recruit who dazzled in two starts in 2020 when he had to replace Trevor Lawrence as a true freshman, but he really struggled in 2021.

He finished with more interceptions than touchdowns, throwing ten picks to only nine touchdowns, leading a Clemson passing offense that was ranked all the way down to 103rd in the nation.

Clemson does have a new offensive coordinator, who’s job it is to help Uiagalelei make the necessary improvements. Unsurprisingly, Clemson has a talented roster outside of the QB.

They return four of five starting offensive linemen, as well as their top three running backs. Where they might have some growing pains is with the pass catchers, who do have talent but have yet to prove anything at the collegiate level.

Defensively, Clemson will need to replace longtime defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who left to be the head coach of Oklahoma. But, luckily for Clemson, they are littered with talent at all levels of the defense.

Even with a first year coordinator, this defense should be one of the best units in the country, and it would be a major disappointment if they were not.

Head coach Dabo Sweeney thinks that Clemson might have seven defensive linemen drafted to the NFL after this year, and based on the talent he has at his disposal he might not be wrong.

Clemson is the fourth ranked team in the country for a reason, but their success will all hinge on the quarterback.

On the other side of the field, Clemson takes on Georgia Tech, who, quite frankly, is most likely in for a rough season. There is a reason why this spread is three touchdowns on Georgia Techs home turf.

Georgia Tech had a rough end to the season in 2021, and then proceeded to watch a significant amount of players enter the transfer portal and are no longer on the team.

The biggest talent mismatch in this game is going to be Clemsons defensive line going against Georgia Techs offensive line. As mentioned, Clemson is an elite defensive front. On the Georgia Tech side, they are in bad shape.

Defensively, Georgia Tech won’t fare much better either. They return the same coaching staff that had one of the worst defenses in all of college football last year, while also losing eight of its top eleven tacklers from that year as well.

So, as if this is any surprise, we will be riding with Clemson to win big in this matchup. Even though they are at home, they are at a significant talent and coaching disadvantage at almost all ends of the roster.
