Both of these teams did not meet their preseason goals last year, as they both finished 5-7 and missed out on a bowl game appearance.

These two teams did play last year, though, with FAU blowing out Charlotte to the tune of 38-9. Interestingly enough, both teams return a decent amount of their 2021 roster as well.

Starting with the underdog 49ers, they return eight starters on offense, which includes starting quarterback Chris Reynolds. They struggled against FAU last year, scoring only nine points, but they figure to be better on offense this year thanks to the experience they bring back.

With that said, they are going against a stout defense in FAU. The Owls only allowed 21.5 points per game last year, and they return six starters from that roster. They also added talent in the transfer portal, with corner Michal Antoine coming over from Iowa State.

While Charlotte returns a lot of their team from last year on offense, the edge still goes to FAUs defense. Charlotte QB Reynolds’ stat line from their matchup last year was not pretty, throwing for 219 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

On the FAU offensive side, they also have the majority of their offensive personnel returning for the 2022 season, including their quarterback N’kosi Perry. Perry was great against Charlotte last year, throwing for 3 touchdowns without any turnovers. But, with that said, FAU won because of their running game.

They ran the ball 40 times for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. FAU was dominant on the ground, and return running back Johnny Ford who had 8 carries for 92 yards (11.5 yards-per-carry average) and 1 touchdown against Charlotte last year.

Looking at how to bet this matchup, I lean towards FAU to cover the spread. They might not dominate to the same degree as last year, but they are at home and significantly more talented.
