All baseball fans, but especially those in New York City have been looking forward to this matchup for months.

The Bronx Bombers hold Major League Baseball’s best record at 66-31, while their cross-town rivals, the Mets, are 59-37, good for the second-best record in the National League and first place in the NL East.

Tuesday and Wednesday’s games are taking place at Citi Field, and the two teams will meet again in August for a pair at Yankee Stadium.

While offensive stars like Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso dominate the headlines, the pitching is also a strength of both teams.

The Yankees rank third in baseball with a 3.15 ERA, and the Mets sixth with a 3.60 ERA.

While neither team has a so-called “ace” taking the mound in Flushing Tuesday night, both starters are having fantastic seasons.

Taijuan Walker will toe the rubber in the top of the first inning for the Mets and face the dangerous top of the lineup for the Yankees. Walker is 7-2 on the season with a 2.55 ERA in 16 starts.

He’s not a particularly high-strikeout pitcher (71 in 91.2 innings), but he creates a lot of contact on the ground, sporting a ground-ball rate of 49.8%.

His Yankee counterpart, Jordan Montgomery, has a 3.24 ERA in 19 starts. Montgomery has had incredibly tough luck with run support, and his 3-2 record shows how misleading the win-loss record can be, especially in today’s game.

Montgomery’s strength is his command, only allowing 20 walks in 108.1 innings pitched.

The Mets’ offense really struggled in the first two games out of the All-Star Break, scoring just one run in consecutive losses to San Diego. The bats did wake up in Sunday’s win, but it wasn’t a great series overall.

This first installment of the Subway Series will feel like a playoff game. Both fanbases have spent the whole season so far feeling great about their squad, but looking across town and seeing another contender.

Now, they finally square off head-to-head. This will be a low-scoring and tense preview of what could be in store for New York in October.

Montgomery won’t allow many free baserunners, and he will turn it over to one of the best bullpens in baseball.
