The Phillies are working to adjust to life without Bryce Harper. Last year’s MVP got hit with a Blake Snell pitch this weekend resulting in a broken thumb that threatens the rest of his season.

While Harper is a huge loss, the Phils have a massive payroll and a roster filled with guys who they should be able to rely on to step up. One of the bigger deals on the roster belongs to Zack Wheeler who takes the mound tonight. 

Zack was slowed with shoulder soreness when he began his throwing program in December, which pushed back much of his preparation for the season. With the late start, He got off to a rough beginning in April losing 3 of 4 games and had an ERA of 5.79.

Fast forward to today, Zack has a 6-4 record with a 2.77 ERA. Although he was not very sharp in his last start vs Texas, he has been the dominant pitcher that got him second in Cy Young voting last season over the last 2 months. In May he had a 1.65 ERA and a 1.93 ERA in June.

Since the beginning of May, he has racked up 68 K in 56 innings in that span, going over 7.5 K in 5/9 overall and 3/4 at home. One of those starts was vs this Braves team where he struck out 10 in 6.2 innings.

Zack currently sits in the 81st percentile in K rate, 57 percentile in whiff%, and 86th percentile in chase rate. He has a terrific 5 pitch arsenal featuring an overpowering 96 MPH 4-seamer with a 30.6 whiff rate. 

This is not my first article targeting the Braves, and most definitely will not be my last either. The Braves have retaken the throne of most strikeouts per game, currently at 9.46 per game. They have 30 K in the last 3 games and are coming off a 12-strikeout game on Monday. They also have the second-worst K rate vs right-handed pitching this season. 

The Phillies will need their ace to dominate this season if they have any shot of making the playoffs, and he has a huge opportunity to do so vs a division rival today that is ahead of them in the standings. At home, I think Zack is up for the task and strikes out 8+ Braves.
