Sunday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions was an incredible reminder how great it is to have golf back after a long holiday break. Jon Rahm, with help from Colin Morikawa, came back from 7 shots behind on Sunday to win the tournament by 2 strokes. Morikawa will want to forget Sunday after dominating the first 3 days of the tournament — he finished -1 on Sunday after his first bogeys of the tournament on three straight holes on the back nine.
This week the tour is island hopping over to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the tour’s second and final stop in the Aloha State this season for the Sony Open in Hawaii at the Waialae Country Club.
The Sony Open in Hawaii has been played at the Waialae Country Club since its inception in 1965. It is a 72 hole, stroke play tournament, with a cut after 36 holes down to the top 65 players and ties.
The weather, as it often is in paradise, should be perfect for golf with temperatures in the mid 70s and mostly sunny skies — the wind is not forecasted to play a factor either.
The Sony Open in Hawaii is held at the Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, Hawaii. The course was designed by Seth Raynor and opened in 1927. The course was built along the coastline and is relatively flat with not many hazards. The course is lined with trees and dotted with 83 bunkers in strategic landing areas and around the greens. In addition, many of the holes are doglegs, adding a bit of extra strategy needed by the players for low scoring.
The course is a par 70 at 7,044 yards and golfers will have the chance to score low this week despite only having 2 par 5s. Like last week, driving accuracy and distance certainly help but will take the backburner to hitting greens and putting.

Tom Kim continues to surprise the golf world after he finished T5 last week. In the four tournaments he has played since winning the Shriners Open, he has finished no worse than T25 and was top 11 in the other 3. Tom is in the top 10 of Strokes Gained: Approach, Tee to Green and Total, so absolutely has the ability to win this week and continue his meteoric rise in the PGA Tour ranks.
Sungjae Im played nearly as well as any golfer on tour to finish last season and last week after finishing T13, he seems to have picked up where he left off. He finished last season in the top 10 of both Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and Total, so if he can get the putter going, he should be a lock for the top 5.
Taylor Montgomery is playing in his first tournament since the RSM Classic but should still compete for the top 10 this week. In his last seven tournaments he has played, he has finished in the T15 or better in six of them.
