After a six-week hiatus and holiday break, the PGA Tour season is officially back in session this week. The Tour heads to its first of back-to-back tournaments in the beautiful Aloha state to compete in the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions
Dates: January 5-8, 2023
Course: Plantation Course, Kapalua, Maui, HI
Purse: $15,000,000
Defending Champ: Cameron Smith
The Sentry Tournament of Champions is a unique event and a great way to kick off the 2023 calendar portion of the PGA Tour season. The field is on the smaller side and consists of players who won on Tour last season and nonwinners who qualified for the TOUR Championship, making it some of the best and most competitive golf to watch.
The event is a 72-hole, stroke play event and with only 39 golfers teeing it up this week. There are no cuts, meaning everyone is taking home some cash.
The wind has the potential to play a factor this week, on an otherwise uneventful sunny and mid-70s week in paradise.
What Course is the Sentry Tournament of Champions Held at?
The Sentry Tournament of Champions has been hosted at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui since 1999. The course was designed by Bill Coore and Tour great Ben Crenshaw. The course features stunning views of the ocean and mountains with elevation changes that challenge players on each hole.
The course is par 73 and 7,596 yards — it is the only par 73 on Tour. The scoring should be on the lower side — the course is a resort course for most of the year and it can show in scoring, with the last five winners averaging (-24). Wind will have the biggest opportunity to be the great equalizer to bring up scores as it did in 2020.

2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions Picks & Predictions
There is a reason Jon Rahm is the favorite this week. In the Sentry Tournament of Champions he has played since 2017, he has never finished outside of the top 10. How well Rahm is putting this week will likely be the biggest roadblock to a win this weekend.
Justin Thomas has won this tournament twice and has finished in the top five a total of five times in the seven times he has played in this tournament. Given his talent and ability to play and his familiarity with the tournament and course, he should be a lock for a top-five finish.
