After a six-week hiatus and holiday break, the PGA Tour season is officially back in session this week. The Tour heads to its first of back-to-back tournaments in the beautiful Aloha state to compete in the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions is a unique event and a great way to kick off the 2023 calendar portion of the PGA Tour season. The field is on the smaller side and consists of players who won on Tour last season and nonwinners who qualified for the TOUR Championship, making it some of the best and most competitive golf to watch.
The event is a 72-hole, stroke play event and with only 39 golfers teeing it up this week. There are no cuts, meaning everyone is taking home some cash.
The wind has the potential to play a factor this week, on an otherwise uneventful sunny and mid-70s week in paradise.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions has been hosted at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui since 1999. The course was designed by Bill Coore and Tour great Ben Crenshaw. The course features stunning views of the ocean and mountains with elevation changes that challenge players on each hole.
The course is par 73 and 7,596 yards — it is the only par 73 on Tour. The scoring should be on the lower side — the course is a resort course for most of the year and it can show in scoring, with the last five winners averaging (-24). Wind will have the biggest opportunity to be the great equalizer to bring up scores as it did in 2020.

The total purse of the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions is the biggest to date on the PGA Tour at $15,000,000. The winner receives 550 FedEx Cup points and a minimum of 24 Official World Golf Ranking points — additional Official World Golf Ranking points can be added based on the tournament’s strength of field.

A total of 40 players qualified for this year’s tournament, consisting of winners on Tour last year and any nonwinners who made the TOUR Championship. Only 39 players will be competing as the current world No. 1, Rory McIlroy has opted not to play in the tournament.
This tournament has one of the most competitive fields — 20 can be found in the top 25 and 30 in the top 50 Official World Golf Rankings.

There is a reason Jon Rahm is the favorite this week. In the Sentry Tournament of Champions he has played since 2017, he has never finished outside of the top 10. How well Rahm is putting this week will likely be the biggest roadblock to a win this weekend.
Justin Thomas has won this tournament twice and has finished in the top five a total of five times in the seven times he has played in this tournament. Given his talent and ability to play and his familiarity with the tournament and course, he should be a lock for a top-five finish.
