Seemingly six different teams on a stacked leaderboard at the Zurich Classic on Sunday had the chance to take home the hardware. It was ultimately two first time winners on tour, Nick Hardy and Davis Riley, who donned the alligator championship belts.
With their first wins on tour, each has a two year exemption on Tour and are invited to the PGA Championship next month.
This week the tour is headed south of the border to Vallarta, Mexico for the last of two stops in Mexico this season for the Mexico Open at Vidanta.

2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta
April 27-30, 2023
The Norman Signature Course at Vidanta,Vallarta, MEX
Purse: $7,700,000
FedExCup Points: 500
Defending Champ: Jon Rahm
This is the second year the Mexico Open has been played on the PGA Tour, making it one of the newest tournaments. While not on the PGA Tour, the Mexico Open has been played since 1944 and is considered Mexico’s national tournament, which attracts a number of Mexican players in the field vying for their country’s glory.
We are back to a normal format after last week’s team play; the tournament is a 72 hole, stroke play, with cut down to the top 65 players and ties after 36 holes.
The weather this week should be perfect for golf with temperatures topping out in the mid 80s and little to no precipitation on the radar. The wind has the potential to pick up in the afternoons with the course being about a mile from the ocean but shouldn’t be anything the players can’t handle.
What Course Is the Mexico Open at Vidanta Held At?
The Norman Signature Course at Vidanta was opened in 2016 and has hosted the Mexico Open in both years it has been played. The course was designed by Greg Norman and is located on the west coast of Mexico, a mile from the Pacific ocean.
There are over 100 bunkers which guard landing areas off the tees and around the greens. Water is also prevalent around the course and will come into play on 14 holes. The rough is cut to two inches at its longest so there will not be anything the golfers can’t navigate.
The course measures in at 7,456, par 71, one of the longer courses on tour. As such, distance off the tee and long irons will play a major factor this week. Wide landing areas mean accuracy off the tee will not play a major factor. As always putting will play a factor but approach into the green and sticking it close will be key to going low.

2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Pick: Jon Rahm Tournament Winner | +250 at BetMGM
The juice almost isn’t even worth the squeeze on this pick but Jon Rahm is world No. 1 for a reason and this course is built for his game. To clarify, any course he plays right now seems to be built for his game but this course specifically is for the grip and rip it guys and there is no one better right now then Rahm.
He is in the top 3 of scoring average on pars 3, 4, and 5 and is No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Total.
2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Pick: Tony Finau Tournament Winner | +750 at BetMGM
Tony Finau has finished in the top 25 in nine of his 12 starts and has not missed a cut since November 2022. Last year here, he finished one off the lead of Rahm for a second place finish so has played well here.
He still has the distance off the tee and the rest of his game has advanced over the last year as well — he is top 5 in Strokes Gained: Total and scoring average on the season.
2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Pick: Wyndham Clark Tournament Winner | +1800 at BetMGM
Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler led for most of the Zurich classic so Clark’s recent form is shaping up nicely for a start this week in a weakened field. He is in the top 10 driving distance which will play a major factor this week.
2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Pick: Top 5 Finish | BetMGM
Gary Woodland can still bomb it with the best of them which will set him up nicely this week. He has not played to the form he played when he won the US Open but he finished T14 at the Masters and could find an opening the weakened field this week to go low.
2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta Pick: Top 10 Finish | BetMGM
Beau Hossler and playing partner last week Wyndham Clark led most of the Zurich Classic. Wyndham got the nod as a potential winner this week based on driving ability alone. Beau was just as close to winning and could find his way to the top 10 this week if he can get a handle on his driver.
