The PGA Tour season is still on its official break but that does not mean we will be without golf, we will just have to wait an extra day. This Friday, 12 teams of 2 will compete in the QBE Shootout, a 3 day team event held at Tiburón Golf Club in Naples, FL.
The QBE Shootout was hosted by Greg Norman and played since 1989. The field is one of the smallest played, at 24 golfers playing on teams of two and features not only players from the PGA Tour, but two players from the LPGA Tour competing for the first time in tournament history. The event is a 3 day, 54 hole, stroke play team event and with the smaller field, no cuts, meaning everyone is taking home some cash.
The weather should not play much of a factor and is forecasting a perfect weekend for golf — temperatures in the mid 70s with little to no chance of rain.
The QBE Shootout has been hosted at the Greg Norman designed Tiburón Golf Club since 2001. The club features two 18 hole courses, the Gold Course and the Black Course, both designed by Greg Norman in 1998 and 2001, respectively, but only the Gold Course will be played this week. The Gold Course also plays host to the LPGA CME Group Championship, which was played just three weeks ago and should be an advantage to the LPGA players teeing it up this week.
The course is par 72, 7,382 yards but these stats will not matter as much as they typically do because of the format of the tournament. Day 1 is a traditional scramble, meaning each player will hit their tee shot and then the team will decide which of the 2 tee shots they both hit from and repeat the process. Day 2 is a modified alternate shot, each player will hit their tee shot but the team will only finish one ball, alternating to whomever did not hit the tee shot. The final day is better ball, meaning both players play the entire hole on their own and the better score is recorded.
These formats lead to extremely low scoring with the last five winning teams averaging just under (-31).

The QBE Shootout will not be aired on the radio.
The total purse of the 2022 The QBE Shootout is $3,800,000. This is not a part of the PGA Tour season schedule and a team event so no FedEx Cup or Official World Golf Ranking points will be awarded. Only the prize money will be on the line this week.
Finish | Payout |
1 | $950,000 |
2 | $590,000 |
3 | $360,000 |
4 | $284,00 |
5 | $246,000 |
The tournament field is composed of 24 players, playing on teams of two. 10 of the PGA players can be found in the top 50 Official World Golf Rankings. The 2 LPGA players teeing it up this week are world No. 1 Nelly Korda, and world No. 7 Lexi Thompson.
Current odds on favorites to win the 2022 QBE Shootout have 19 PGA Tour wins between them, most of any pairing, Jason Day and Billy Horschel (+500), followed by Harris English and Matt Kuchar (+550), and Tom Hoge and Sahith Theegala (+600) round out the top 3.
2021 Jason Kokrak and Kevin Na (-33)
2020 Harris English and Matt Kuchar (-37)
2019 Rory Sabbatini and Kevin Tway (-31)
2018 Brian Harman and Patton Kizzire (-30)
2017 Sean O’Hair and Steve Stricker (-26)

There is no team playing this week who have partnered together more than Harris English and Matt Kuchar, playing in their 8th as a team, the next closest are six years behind that mark. Not only have they played together they have won together, winning the shootout three times and finishing runner up twice. Experience with the format and tournament can be all this team needs to continue its winning ways.

While they have the longest odds to finish in the top 3, I think they have the ability to pull it off with the format of the tournament alone. Both have years of experience on their prospective tours and Lexi specifically at this course and in team play — she has played on five different US Solheim Cup teams. I am willing to take a flier on those odds.
