Canada’s own and Kent State great Mackenzie Hughes made his victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship last week anything but easy coming down the stretch.
He was forced to and converted putt after putt — often to save par — to fend off Sepp Straka and win on the second playoff hole after draining an 8-foot birdie. This is Hughes’ first win this season and his second career win on Tour.
This week, the Tour is heading to Sin City for the tour’s only stop in Nevada this season to play the Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.

The Shriners Children’s Open has been played at various courses in the Las Vegas area as an official PGA Tour event since 1983. It is a 72-hole, stroke-play tournament, with a cut after 36 holes down to the top 65 players and ties.
The weather will not play much of a factor at all this week in the desert and is calling for a perfect weekend of golf.
The Shriners Children’s Open is held at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The course was opened in 1991 and designed by Bobby Weed and player consultant Fuzzy Zoeller. The course blends perfectly with its surrounding natural habitats and was designed to help preserve and protect the land it was built on.
The course features over 90 bunkers and plenty of natural hazards. There are only a few water hazards that come into play around the course as it is mostly a desert-scape.

The course is par 71, 7,255 yards and plays as one of the easier courses on the Tour. Four of the last five winners have averaged just under (-23), with the outlier being 2017 when the winds affected play so much that the winner came in at (-9).
This week will likely require birdies or better to even make it through to the weekend. Long drives are not a prerequisite for winning here — the thin desert air and higher elevation can give the players extra yards on every swing.
Driving accuracy will be a stat to watch this week as missing the fairway can blow up a hole and score quickly. The biggest emphasis should be placed on ball striking and putting this week.
The total purse of the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open is $8,000,000. The winner receives 500 FedEx Cup points and a minimum of 24 Official World Golf Ranking points — additional Official World Golf Ranking points can be added based on the tournament’s strength of field.
The champion also receives a two-season exemption on the PGA Tour, as well as inclusion in the 2023 Masters and 2023 PGA Championship, and the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The tournament field is composed of 144 players. The field is one of the stronger fields we have seen so far this season with four of the top 25 and 12 of the top 50 Official World Golf Rankings, teeing it up this week. Comparatively, last week had four of the top 50.
Current odds favorites to win the Shriners Children’s Open is Official World Golf No. 4 Partick Cantlay (+700), followed by the reigning champion Sungjae Im (+1200). Max Homa (+2000) rounds out the top three.

There is a reason Patrick Cantlay is far and away the favorite this week. While that does not always translate to taking home the hardware on Sunday, Cantlay has always played well at TPC Summerlin and this week should be no different.
Reigning champion Sungjae Im was playing about as well as any golfer on Tour to finish last season — he finished in the top two in three of the last five tournaments and top 15 in the other two.
I expect Im to pick up right where he left off last season with a top-five finish this week.

Taylor Montgomery continues to play well this season with a top-five and a top-10 finish in his two starts. The field is better this week but he remains in the top five in strokes gained total and putting. If he continues to play well, he should be a lock for a top-10 finish this week.
