The Angels will send out 25-year-old Patrick Sandoval, who is 4-9 on the year with a 3.05 ERA.  His expected ERA is particularly concerning, as his xERA is 4.13 which is significantly higher than his actual ERA. His fastball, which he throws roughly 23% of the time, is actually one of the worst fastballs in baseball — his opponents have hit for a .371 average against it.

The Yankees will counter with their ace: Gerrit Cole. Coming into today, Cole is 10-6 with a 3.31 ERA paired with a 1.01 WHIP. Unlike Sandoval, Cole’s fastball is one of the best in baseball. His expected batting average off of this pitch is just .198 and he utilizes it for over 51% of his pitches, which is noticeably more often than Sandoval. While Sandoval struggles with his fastball, Cole shows dominance with his own.
