What is a Home Run Bet?

A home run bet is exactly what it sounds like — betting on a team or player to have a home run in the game. One of the most popular bets in baseball sports betting, players can wager on their favorite players to knock one out of the park — usually for some nice payouts.

While you can bet on a team to score a home run, this isn’t as popular as the odds are going to be heavily favored and you’d need to bet a large amount of money to earn any significant profit. The more popular route is betting on players to hit a home run.

Say, for example, you wanted to bet on Mookie Betts to score a home run. Even though he’s one of the best hitters in the game, the odds for him hitting a home run in a specific game can be as high as +500 ($100 to win $500).

One of the most fun aspects of a home run bet is that you are never out of it. Players can hit a home run at any point of the game, regardless of the score. There’s also the possibility of extra innings, which increases your opportunities for a home run.

Of course, remember each batter only gets a few opportunities to hit, usually three or four per game. That’s why the odds are so high, as there aren’t a ton of chances for a player to hit a home run in just one game.

How to Bet on Home Run Bets

Home run betting can be quite random, as indicated by the high odds, but sharp bettors can find an edge on any game.

Baseball is all about numbers and statistics and it’s no different for sports betting. Sharp home run bettors analyze a few key statistics to give them an edge over the books in home run betting.

First, it’s important to analyze how the player has performed on the season. Then, sharp bettors look at how the opposing pitcher is and how they’ve fared against one another historically. Some batters are better against lefties and vice versa, so this is certainly something to consider.

It’s also important to take into consideration the ballpark where the game is being played. Some are easier to hit home runs in than others based on the distance needed to score. All of these factors are important when wagering on home run bets, as well as using mathematically profitable line shopping with OddsJam.
