New York Sports Betting

When you think of New York, you probably don’t think of casinos and sportsbooks. That has certainly been reflected in the legislature of New York sports betting; which lags in comparison to other northeastern states, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. New York legalized retail (i.e. in-person) sports betting in June 2019.

The state was originally positioned against the possibility of legalizing mobile sports betting. However, with the Covid Pandemic and potential state-wide budget cuts, the state turned to mobile betting as an option to increase revenue. It took more than 2 and half years, but starting in January 2022, New Yorkers can now finally place legal bets online in the state. So far, only 7 books have mobile sports betting. But we would expect more to come in the near future.

Like New Jersey and a few other states, you will not be able to place any bets on any NCAA game involving a New York-based college or university. New York also takes it one step further. You are unable to place a wager on any collegiate game taking place in the state, regardless if a New York team is playing. Best Sportsbooks in New York

1. Caesars Sportsbook

Caesars Sportsbook is a great sportsbook, with a ton of good promotions and odds boosts. We like to call Caesars Sportsbook the OddsBoost god because of the sheer volume of odds boosts they have on a daily basis. They also have some really good promos as well, highlighted below.

  • Caesars Sign Up Bonus: Bonus first bet of up to $1,100.

Is New York a Good Sports Betting State?

Does New York Allow Mobile Sports Betting?

Yes, Finally! It took 2 and half years after the legalization of retail betting, but New Yorkers can now place online sports wagers in the state.

How Many Sportsbooks are Available in New York?

Not that many, with 7 total books available. By all metrics, the sportsbook handle has exploded since the adoption of mobile betting. We would anticipate that many more books would come online soon; assuming they can get through the regulatory red tape.

The legal books are: BetMGM, Fanduel, DraftKings, BetRivers, Caesars, PointsBet, WynnBet

Does New York Have Good Sports Betting Odds?

The legislature certainly does not make it easy for sportsbooks who want to operate in the state. New York books are subject to a whopping 51% tax rate; the highest of all states with mobile betting. On top of this, new books will need to pay a $20 million licensing fee upon approval to operate.

With all that in mind, it will be interesting to see how the books pass those costs to the consumers. Does it mean every bet that was -110 will now be -120? No, they won’t make it that obvious. But there are ways they can sneak those costs in there; mostly by way of unfavorable parlay odds or limiting promotions.

How to Sign Up for a Sportsbook in New York

New York is easy. You can do everything necessary to get signed up all from your phone/computer. Some states require an in-person sign-up, but New York is not one of those states.

They also make signing up and depositing fairly simple as well. This is detailed in the next section, but for the sign-up process, the sportsbook will ask you a couple of personal questions to verify your identity. Then once you are signed up you can set up the payment method by syncing the app to your account.

New York Sports Betting Rules & Regulations

Only two rules in New York.

  1. Must be 21 or older
  2. Must be physically located in New York
  3. Unable to bet on colleges or universities located in New York or any college sporting event taking place in the state

    • The sign-up and deposit step is pretty seamless. They will ask a couple of questions to verify your age and identity such as social security number, address, and/or driver’s license. But, it is pretty easy overall.
    • Once you are signed up you will need to deposit money into your account. You will do this by selecting a payment method and proceeding with the prompt to get the payment method synced to your account. It is easiest to go with a direct deposit to a banking account since you can easily withdraw and deposit funds directly into that account.
  3. Verify your Location
    • If you are on your phone then your phone will do this automatically using its GPS feature, but on the desktop can be a little more complicated.
