Serie A Matchday 6 Picks & Predictions

Atalanta vs. Cremonese Pick: Atalanta -1.5 | -106 at BetRivers

Sunday, Sept. 11 | 6:30 a.m. ET

Atalanta are on absolute fire and already showing a desire to redeem themselves after what was considered a lost season last year. Collecting 13 points in their first five Serie A fixtures via four wins and a draw has been a dream start for manager Gian Piero Gasperini and Atalanta.

They will look to keep the momentum headed in the right direction this weekend against a Cremonese club who have really struggled to get going so far early on.

Atalanta are entering this date off the back of a 2-0 victory over newcomers Monza in which the result was never in question. The clean sheet marks the third so far this season, which is a contrast to the Atalanta side we have become accustomed to over the last few years — run and gun type of style.

Having scored 9 goals in their five competitive fixtures to date and having gotten on the scoresheet in all five of those matches will certainly pose questions of a Cremonese backline who have had difficulty defending their goal.

The one area of concern for Atalanta has been their home form — collecting only two wins from their last 10 when playing at the Gewiss Stadium is an issue in need of fixing if they are expected to both collect the win today and furthermore challenge for the League title.

Cremonese have played five matches in the Serie A, losing four and drawing one. Their most recent being a 0-0 draw to a Sassuolo team that has disappointed so far this season, so while the point could be considered an impressive one, it’s one against a struggling club. In other words, we’re taking into account their previous four fixtures where they conceded 9 goals and have a hard time seeing a way Cremonese will be able to contain Atalanta in the defensive third.

The one bright spot for this Cremonese squad is while they have been dropping points at a consistent rate, their work ethic and fight to remain in the match can not be questioned. Of their four losses, only one was by more than one goal (3-1 loss on the road to Inter Milan) so we could be in for an interesting 90 minutes of soccer.

All things considered, Atalanta look like they are a team on a mission after a disastrous campaign last season and have gotten off on the right foot — all cylinders are clicking and their defensive backline looks locked in — their home form leaves a lot to be desired but given their start to the season it’s only a matter of time until that turns around.

We’re looking at a comfortable Atalanta victory and running with the -1.5 spread.

Sassuolo vs. Udinese Pick: Udinese Draw No Bet | -114 at BetRivers

Sunday, Sept. 11 | 9 a.m. ET

Sassuolo have gotten off to a disappointing start. A season filled with expectation has resulted in three draws, a loss and a single win out of the gate. One of the more frustrating parts of the situation has been their lack of finishing in the final third.

In their five matches, they have been held off the scoresheet in three of them, including their two most recent matches — both 0-0 draws. If they are to turn the tide around and start collecting wins, their finishing will have to produce the way we know they can, especially when considering their opponent this week — an informed Udinese squad.

Udinese are impressing us more and more each week. Three clean sheets in their first five matches have resulted in an extremely positive start to the season. Udinese have won their last three matches and are entering this fixture in the Mapei Stadium off a 4-0 thumping of one of the Title favorites AS Roma.

Having scored 9 goals in the league to date, Udinese will look to continue their hot start in the final third and may not require more than a single goal when looking at the struggles across the pitch. Historically, Udinese have fared well in this fixture, collecting three wins and two draws in the last five while holding onto those good fortunes when listed as the road team.

Udinese have not lost any of the last five when Sassuolo has been listed as the home squad and have actually kept the home club off the score sheet in four of the last five at the Mapei Stadium.

We’re backing this hot Udinese squad that’s finishing has been everything they could have asked for and think they take advantage of a struggling Sassuolo squad that are having a hard time finding the back of the net. We got form and history on our side today and are rolling with it.
