Week 1 of the NFL seasons brings us a rematch of the opening game of last years NFL season, this time with the Dallas Cowboys playing host to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hopefully, we get a game similar to last years epic showdown that saw the Bucs win on a made field goal with no time remaining.

Let’s look into this years matchup.

Injuries Already Taking a Toll

This game was a pick’em as recently as 24 hours ago, but, in an unfortunate turn of events for the Cowboys, their All-Pro left-tackle Tyron Smith went down with a torn hamstring in practice and is expected to miss multiple months of the season.

The loss of Smith, along with the Cowboys losing two starting offensive lineman to free agency in the offseason, leaves them with a major question mark along the line.

So, now with that news in mind, odds are starting to shift towards the Buccaneers. But, with that said, the Bucs are dealing some injury issues of their own.

Bucs starting center Ryan Jensen went down earlier in training camp with a knee injury and is expected to miss the season, as did another Bucs inside starting offensive lineman Aaron Stinnie, who is also going to miss the season with a knee injury.

These two injuries, combined with last years starting guard Ali Marpet retiring in the offseason, leaves the Bucs with uncertainty along the interior of their line.

So, before the season even started, both of these Super Bowl contenders have been dealt with massive blows. In even more interesting symmetry between these teams- both of them are dealing with starting wide receivers recovering from a torn ACL at the end of the 2021 season.

Bucs WR Chris Godwin tore his ACL and MCL in Week 15 last year, and underwent surgery on Jan. 3. He has returned to practice, but is still questionable to be ready by Week 1.

Cowboys WR Michael Gallup is on a similar timeline, as he tore his ACL in Week 17 last year. He has also returned to practice, but carries a similar questionable tag to suit up in Week 1.

Sticking with the Cowboys- they are dealing with a lot of changes at the skill positions on top of the uncertainty surrounding Gallup. In the offseason, the Cowboys traded starting receiver Amari Cooper to the Browns, and they also lost fourth-string WR Cedric Wilson to free agency.

Those two losses, along with Gallup being out, leaves a gaping hole in the weapons for Dak Prescott to throw to. The Cowboys didn’t do much in the offseason to replace the vacated targets, either, with the only move coming in the draft with the selection of WR Jalen Tolbert in the third round of this past seasons NFL draft.

On the Bucs side, they are dealing with changes of their own, with head coach Bruce Arians retiring in the offseason and being replaced by Todd Bowles. There is hope in Tampa that there won’t be any significant growing pains, as the entire coaching staff surrounding Bowles is relatively unchanged.

Bowles was previously the defensive coordinator for the Bucs, and there was no change at offensive coordinator either, with Byron Leftwich staying on the staff.

While the Bucs will miss retired future hall-of-famer Rob Gronkowski, they have better in-house options to replace their vacated targets than the Cowboys do.

The Bucs signed reliable slot option Russell Gage, and they still have four-time Pro Bowler Mike Evans at receiver as well.

Overall, this is a tough game to handicap with all the injuries and uncertainty, but I will go with the team that still has Tom Brady at quarterback.

Brady has enough weapons to trust that he will be able to get it done, and I was already worried about the Cowboys offense prior to the Smith injury. Smith going down could be a death sentence for this Cowboys season.
