The 49ers won two straight road games in the playoffs to make it to the NFC Championship game last year, but eventually fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Rams.

That was a tough loss for the 49ers, who held a ten point lead in the fourth quarter and was a dropped interception from safety Jaquiski Tartt from winning that game.

Now, moving on to 2022, the 49ers will feature a new quarterback with Trey Lance replacing long-time starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Because of that change, there is quite a bit of unknown when trying to forecast the 49ers 2022 season.

But, because of how brave my mom tells me I am, let’s try and make sense of this squad.

2022 49ers NFL Betting Odds

Even with the change at quarterback, the betting markets love the 49ers this year. Normally, uncertainty lends itself to worse odds, but FanDuel gives them the seventh-best odds to win the Super Bowl (+1600).

Just ahead of them are the Chargers (+1400), and they are one spot ahead of the Broncos (+1700).

In terms of making it to the Super Bowl and winning the NFC, they have the fourth-best odds. One spot behind the Packers and Rams (+500), and one spot ahead of the Cowboys (+850).

I can certainly understand why the 49ers are getting the hype, but to me there is too much uncertainty surrounding Lance for me to fully get on board.

Lance has played very little football in his career, including college. In college, he only started 17 games and attempted 318 passes in the entirety of his college career. For context, Joe Burrow averaged 453 passes in his two seasons as the LSU starter.

Then, in Lance’s rookie year this past year, he played in six total games, starting two, and still only attempted 71 passes.

Lance is extremely green for someone taking over a Super Bowl contender. Generally, quarterbacks need some experience before they can lead a team to a championship.

Sure, there are some recent QBs such as Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes who led their teams to Super Bowls in their second year starting (with Burrow losing and Mahomes winning the SB).

BUT, those are also historically good, potential hall-of-fame quarterbacks who had a year of experience. We can’t put Lance in that category yet, and he is going into his first year starting. That year of experience cannot be overstated.

While I have a ton of faith in head coach Kyle Shanahan, who is a phenomenal coach, to get the best out of lance, there is still a lot of risk involved with backing the 49ers.

With that said, Lance is extremely talented, which is why the 49ers traded so much to get him, as is the rest of the 49ers roster.

If Lance can pop the way the the previously mentioned QBs did, then this 49ers team is absolutely good enough to win the Super Bowl.

2022 49ers Win Total Analysis

As of the time of this writing, the 49ers win total over/under is set at 9.5, according to FanDuel, with the over being heavily favored. FanDuel prices the over at -145 odds, with the under at +125.

One thing that I love to look at when forecasting win totals is strength of schedule. For the 49ers, they are pretty middle of the pack, having the 13th easiest schedule in the NFL.

With that said, as referenced in the Rams season preview in the link above, this NFC West division could take a major step back this year compared to last year.

Of course, Russell Wilson is gone, who was so good he made a flawed Seahawks roster dangerous on a yearly basis. The Seahawks figure to struggle mightily without him.

On the Cardinals side, they have potential blowup written all over them. There have been numerous reports out of Arizona detailing some dysfunction with quarterback Kyler Murray and head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

This isn’t a Cardinals season preview, but that is a team that is ripe to fade this year.

The Rams will be good, of course, but they are so top-heavy that one injury to a major player and the Rams could take a step back as well.

If you take away the four games against the Rams and Cardinals, the 49ers only have three games against 2021 playoff teams.

So, all-in-all, we might look at the 49ers at the end of the season as a team that benefited from an easier schedule than initially projected.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the 49ers defense, too. I love what DeMeco Ryans has done with that unit. The guess here is that the 49ers will have a top 5 defense led by Ryans, and that he will be a head coach heading into 2023.

So, with all that in mind, I lean towards the over 9.5 wins for the 49ers. I am definitely nervous about how inexperienced Lance is, but I trust the coaching of Shanahan to take advantage of what could be an easy schedule.
