March Madness Parlay Today – April 1, 2023

Leg 1: Florida Atlantic vs. San Diego State Pick: San Diego State -3.5 | +105 at DraftKings

Saturday, April 1 | 6:09 p.m. ET

For the first game of Saturday’s parlay, we’re looking at a matchup between Florida Atlantic and San Diego State. To get here, 9-seed Florida Atlantic has beaten Memphis, Farleigh Dickinson, Tennessee, and Kansas State (a 3-seed), while 5-seed San Diego State has beaten Charleston, Furman,(1-seed) Alabama, and Creighton.

The advantage here goes to San Diego State, as they’ve beaten the best overall seed, but Florida Atlantic has wins over three and four seeds so they’re not far behind.

Florida Atlantic has been the better team by offensive rating (by far) and have been essentially equal to SDSU in defensive rating, but much of that is due to the lower quality of opposition that they’ve faced during the season.

Defense wins championships, and SDSU has been an absurdly good defensive team in the tournament, giving up more than 57 points just once (in a 71-64 beatdown of 1-seed Alabama). I’m taking San Diego State to win this, and to do so impressively.

Leg 2: Miami vs. UConn Pick: Miami Moneyline | +200 at DraftKings

Saturday, April 1 | 8:49 p.m. ET

For the second leg of Saturday’s parlay, we’re looking at a matchup between two powerhouse teams, Miami (a 5-seed) and UConn (a 4-seed). UConn is favored here by a decent amount, but Miami has had the harder tournament by far and has passed every test.

In offensive ratings, these teams actually could not be closer this year — Miami at eighth, UConn at 7th. But on defensive rating, the gap is wide; UConn is 21st, Miami is 28th.

That said, in the tournament, Miami is scoring a bit more than UConn thus far, and while they’re giving up more PPG (a wide gulf of 70.3 PPG vs. 59.3 PPG), they’ve faced a No. 1seed, a No. 2 seed, a No. 4 seed, and a No. 12 seed while UConn’s hardest opponent has been a No. 3 seed (in addition to a No. 5 seed, No. 8 seed, and No. 13 seed).

I favor a team that has beaten tougher opponents, and despite them being underdogs, I expect the Miami Cinderella-story to continue on Saturday night, as they take down yet another superior seed in UConn and advance to the NCAA Championship.
