Warriors vs. Celtics Game 4 Betting Preview

As the teams shifted to Boston in a 1-1 series, the Celtics punched first and took the decisive Game 3 on their home floor. They came out with a plan to be more physical and attack the basket consistently.

The “big 3” for Boston showed up tremendously in Game 3. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart combined for 77 of the 116 points scored.

The Warriors finally had both of the splash brothers going in the NBA Finals. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson combined to hit 11 threes, scoring 56 of the team’s 100 points.

They had to work for every basket they shot, as Boston upped its physicality on and off the ball. The Warriors will be in full desperation mode in Game 4 to avoid a 3-1 deficit in the series.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors did not match the intensity of Boston in Game 3. They came out lackadaisical and let the Celtics get an early double-digit lead.

The biggest disparity came in the points in the paint. They would score just 26 to the Celtics’ 52.

A big adjustment has been for the Warriors to stick with Draymond Green at the center spot. He and Kevon Looney only shared the floor for 7.7 minutes in Game 3, to create advantageous spacing and allow for more switching.

It in turn has nullified the rim protection and shot-blocking. Working at an already athletic deficit, they get even smaller on the inside. The Warriors will have to walk the line between when to downsize to have a chance at evening this series.

Curry continued his masterful play in the NBA Finals. Added another 6 threes on 54.5% from the outside, with a large number of them being off his shot creation.

The Celtics have still decided not to go with a full “trap” on his screens, to limit the rest of the Warriors. It continued to have an impact, as Curry only finished with 2 assists.

An adjustment made by coach Steve Kerr is to have the ball screens set even higher, to put big men Robert Williams and Al Horford into space.

The issue is still hard Curry has to work to get a shot, taking multiple dribbles in isolation to score gets exhausting as a game goes on. Curry needs someone else to take some of the offensive shot creation burdens in Game 4.

After 4-14 shooting from behind the arc in both home games, Thompson found the stroke with 5-13 in Game 3. Put in 25 points with 3 assists, while spelling big runs from Boston with timely shots.

The attempts are still of the very difficult variety. Contested and turning fadeaway long jump shots are things Boston will have to live with, and the Warriors hope to continue to fall.

Thompson was just 2-4 from inside the arc in Game 3 and will need to diversify his game a bit to attack this stingy Boston defense.

Draymond Green might have had his worst NBA Finals game of his career, being a non-factor on both ends. His reluctance to shoot has become extreme, not even looking at the basket at times with the ball.

Only 4 attempts in almost 35 minutes of play, while fouling out in the fourth. As the secondary playmaker in the starting lineup, the Warriors need him to be a threat on that end. His rotations on defense were a step late and were even targeted by Brown at the point of attack.

The Celtics knowing he’s the main rim protector, have taken him out of the paint and pressured the rim consistently. How Green responds in Game 4 will be a deciding factor in this series.

Boston Celtics

After getting the split on the road, the Celtics were able to come to protect the home court. After a night full of turnovers and over penetrating in Game 2, the story of Game 3 was the patience of Boston.

They realized they had the physical advantage at just about every position on the floor, and deliberately attacked the Warriors at the rim.

Tatum struggled from the field, only going 9 for 23 but his playmaking was magnificent all night. He hunted any of the guards on the floor, getting the paint and kicking out just at the right time for open threes.

After only 3 assists in Game 2, he put up 9 assists in Game 3 and controlled the tempo. Once the Warriors committed to fully switching with minimal help to counter, he attacked the rim for big-time layups to stave off a Warriors comeback.

He and the team’s continued patience will be huge for Game 4.

After a rough Game 2 shooting, Brown bounced back in an incredible Game 3 performance. He would lead the Celtics in scoring and be a huge part in putting unsurmountable pressure on the basket.

The Warriors’ big adjustment in their Game 2 win was switching Green as the main defender on to Brown, helping force a 5-17 night.

Brown relished that matchup in Game 3, attacking Green with patience and deliberate spots on the floor. When the Warriors sent help at the rim, he was able to find the lob or kick out for open teammates on the perimeter.

The Celtics have gone away from the two big lineups in Horford and Robert Willilams. They have instead pivoted more toward having Grant Williams in with either big man. It has helped tremendously, even forcing the Warriors to adapt to them.

Grant Williams aids the spacing and switch-ability in ways the starting lineups just can’t keep up with. It makes the Tatum and Rob Williams pick and roll much more lethal, giving the lob threat with a spacer that the Warriors have to respect.

It leads to Tatum getting open looks and getting “downhill” to the rim. How each team responds to the small lineups will decide the fate of this series.

Warriors vs. Celtics Game 4 Betting Pick: Warriors Moneyline | +145 at Caesars

In a series that has gone back and forth, I expect Game 4 to be no different. The Warriors should get a bounce-back game from Green, and Thompson seems to have found a rhythm finally.

Pending the health of Curry — who hurt his foot late in the fourth — I would take the Warriors at +145. I would bet this up to -110.
