The Diamondbacks strike out the most in the league against right-handed pitching which explains why, and explains why it will happen again tonight. Something that stands out the most to me in this matchup is the splitter.
Mahle throws this pitch about a third of the time and Arizona has massive whiff rates against the pitch. Five of Arizona’s hitters have a 40%+ whiff rate against right-handed splitters. Four above 50% which is insane.
He will be facing a lineup nearly full of lefties, which is the handed side that he throws this pitch the most to. He has logged six or more innings pitched in 5 of his last 6 starts, so I am finding him very reliable tonight.
All he needs is to average slightly more than one strikeout per inning and that just feels like free money to me. Let’s lock this one and cash yet another “Best Bet”.
