Our MLB expert breaks down his top plays and predictions for today’s All-Star showdown in Los Angeles! Find out the picks @KeepTheJuice21 is eyeing tonight.
The All-Star game is tough to predict — and MVP is even tougher. For that reason, I want to avoid the very top of the odds list.
Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani have the two best odds of winning MVP. Vlad Guerrero Jr. comes in a close third followed finally by our guy Mookie Betts.
There are a few things to love about Mookie today over the other top players. The first is that he’s playing for the National League. If the American League wins, there are more big options for who could be the MVP.
If it’s NL, there’s a much better chance that Betts is in the mix. He’s an excellent two-way player and will likely get a lot of at-bats batting second in the lineup.
It’s always going to be unpredictable, but the statistics align well for Betts.
Take a trip back with me, to January 9, 2022. The Raiders host the Chargers in Week 17 and win 35-32 in overtime. You might be thinking, “What does a random NFL game have to do with the MLB All-Star game?”
Well, the immediate similarity — if you’ve been keeping up with my picks — is that I picked that game to end in a tie as well.
Picture another scenario: you’re teeing off on the seventh hole of a woods course and there’s big pond immediately to your right. All you’re thinking is, “Don’t go right, don’t go right.” Where do you think you’ll hit it?
If you remember the Chargers-Raiders game, there was a bizarre set of circumstances where if the game ended in a tie, both teams would make the playoffs, but if the team lost they would be out.
It was all anyone could talk about, this crazy tie scenario. And lo and behold, the game went to overtime with a deep field goal only barely breaking the tie in the last seconds of OT.
This brings us to the All-Star game, which implemented a new rule this year. If the game is tied after nine innings, the result is decided by an AL/NL home run derby.
It’s all I’ve been hearing today and it’s all the broadcast is going to be talking about if the game is tight close to the end. I promise you it is on the players’ minds. They all want to win, but when you’re staring at the water, that’s probably where it’s going to go.
