Sometimes it’s impossible not to get emotional about baseball. It’s a beautiful game.

We all saw the reaction between Willson Contreras and Ian Happ a few nights ago as they likely said goodbye to Wrigley Field. Both stars are on the trading block and will likely be gone by the trade deadline.

When you’re looking at a tight spread, always look for the intangibles. The Cubs are losing the last of their World Series-winning players and the clubhouse can feel it. These guys are playing for more than a regular July game right now.

And if you think the results aren’t tangible, check again. The Cubs have rattled off six wins in a row with four coming against playoff contenders in the Phillies and Mets. They beat the Pirates too, but let’s not kid ourselves about that one.

The end of an era brings extra juice and extra focus, which is sometimes all it takes in this game. 

Meanwhile, the Giants are on an opposite path, losing seven in a row coming into tonight, including the last three against the Diamondbacks. They’re having a tremendous amount of trouble scoring and are beginning to slip out of a wild-card spot.

Tonight they’re starting Alex Wood, who has been fairly average. There isn’t much separating him from the Cubs starter Justin Steele — a reliable but unremarkable starter.

Wood does give up a higher hard-hit rate and more home runs though so you can count that in favor of the Cubs. Ultimately, it comes down to the hitting, which the Cubs have been doing well.

They’re winning close games and have the right mindset at the moment. Don’t undervalue it.
