Throughout the MLB season, I have not been shy about giving young guys a shot very early into their career. I find it is an excellent time to capitalize on great value/ catch a guy before pro scouting reports catch up to him. I will be doing that again today.
Our guy tonight is Hunter Brown. Hunter is the 71st best prospect in the MLB according to MLB.com. The 24 year old is 6’2, 212 LBS, and has an electric arsenal. His top two pitches are his four seamer and an elite curveball.
In his first start, his fastball averaged 96.1 MPH while he kept batters off balance with his 82 MPH curve. His slider was a nice surprise with a 33.3% whiff rate. He got off to a terrific start. He pitched six scoreless innings, only allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out five. He threw 79 pitches in that one, so we could see him climb into the 80s tonight.
Detroit has been a top target for K’s all season, especially versus RHP. During the last 30 days, they have the 8th highest K rate vs righties, and they have the 4th worst for the season. They average the 10th most K per game. They have the 8th worst contact rate in pitches inside the zone, and the 3rd highest whiff rate in the league.
I think the rookie can get 5K’s here.
