Last Sunday capped off a wild finish to the Florida swing which culminated in Taylor Moore hoisting the trophy at the Valspar Championship. Moore held off Jordan Spieth and the leader for much of the tournament, Adam Schenk, finishing (-4) on the day and a stroke clear of the next player when the dust settled. This is Moore’s first career victory on tour in 46 tries.

The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play is a relatively new tournament which began in 1999 and is one of the only match play tournaments played all season. This year will also be the last iteration of the tournament. The field is a bracket style tournament filled with the top 64 available Official World Golf Ranked players.
The players are broken down into 16 groups of four and play a round robin tournament which determines the single golfer advancing from the group play. If there is a tie within the group, a sudden death stroke play tiebreaker is held to determine the winner. Once the 16 golfers are decided, the tournament proceeds with a knockout tournament to determine the overall winner.
Winds and potential rains will challenge the players early Wednesday and Thursday but will make way for calmer and sunny weather to finish the week and highs in the low 80s.
The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play has been played at the Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas since 2016. The course, designed by Pete Dye in 1984 with two distinct 9s, the front 9 features rolling hills with the back 9 featuring the lowlands surrounding Lake Austin.
The Austin Country Club measures in at 7,108 par 71. The style of the tournament being match play means anyone can get hot and win here. Of the winners at Austin Country Club, three have been in the Top 5 seeding and three have been outside of 32.
Distance off the tee is useful, but not required. Putting this week will be a major factor and could be the deciding one this weekend.

The field a week at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play features only 64 players, most likely due to the time constraints a full field would impose. Despite the lower quantity of golfers teeing it up, the field is still extremely competitive top to bottom. 42 of the top 50 Official World Golf Ranking players are teeing it up this week.
Current favorites to win the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play is last year’s winner and former major champions Scottie Scheffler (+800), Jon Rahm (+1000), and Rory McIlroy (+1200) rounding out the top 3.
2022 Scottie Scheffler
2021 Billy Horschel
2020 Canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic
2019 Kevin Kisner
2018 Bubba Watson

There is a reason Scottie Scheffler is the odds on favorite this week. He has played this tournament twice and finished No. 2 and No. 1. He has played in nine events this season and finished top 25 in eight.
Did I mention he played down the road at University of Texas? I am going with the hometown kid.
Patrick Cantlay has the ability and game to play well here. He is never too emotional on the course which is needed in match play. He has never made it out of the group stage but he is the top seed in his group and when he does make it out, he should have no issues making his way to the quarter finals.

Jon Rahm would like to forget most of the Florida swing but despite his poor play as of late, in his eight starts this season, he has six top 10 finishes and two wins. He has the talent to carry him to the quarter finals.
