2023 Wells Fargo Championship

  • May 4-7, 2023
  • Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, NC
  • Purse: $20,000,000
  • FedExCup Points: 500
  • Defending Champ: Max Homa

The Wells Fargo Championship began in 2003 and has been played at Quail Hollow Club every year but 2017 and 2022 when the club hosted the PGA Championship and the Presidents Cup. The tournament is a 72 hole, stroke play, with cut down to the top 65 players and ties after 36 holes.

The forecast is shaping up for a perfect week of golf. Temperatures will max out in the high 60s to low 70s and outside of some early showers Saturday; it should be a calm, sunny week.

What Course Is the Wells Fargo Championship Held At?

The Quail Hollow Club was opened in 1961 and is no stranger to PGA events — recently hosting the Presidents Cup and the 2017 PGA Championship but is best known for the Wells Fargo Championship. The course was originally designed by George Cobb and has undergone changes by Arnold Palmer in 1986 and Tom Fazio in 2003 and again in 2017 to prepare for the PGA Championship.

The course features more than 50 bunkers, which guard landing areas off the tee and surrounding the green. Water comes into play on six holes and the majority can be found on the finishing stretch which makes for incredible finishes.

The course measures in at 7,538, par 71, making it one of the longer courses on tour so while it is not a prerequisite, the players who are long off the tee will benefit.

However, this is one of the harder courses when it comes to scoring statistics and will not favor any specific skill set —  it will require the best all around golfers to be the best to compete this week. Distance, accuracy off the tee and putting will be key factors to watch this week.

2023 Wells Fargo Championship Pick: Patrick Cantlay Tournament Winner | +1200 at BetMGM

Patrick Cantlay has the all around game to win this week at the Wells Fargo Championship. The current No. 4 in the world has nine top 25 finishes in his 11 starts this season. Cantlay is currently ranked second in Total Driving — a combination of accuracy and distance off the tee and ranks in the top 4 of Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and Total. He played in the President’s Cup most recently at Quail Hollow finishing, 3-1-0.

2023 Wells Fargo Championship Picks: Top 5 Finish | BetMGM

Rory McIlroy | +160 at BetMGM

Xander Schauffele | +300 at BetMGM

Viktor Hovland | +400 at BetMGM

Missed cuts at the PLAYERS Championship and Masters for Rory McIlroy has me fading a win but he is still the top ranked player on the field and paying out plus money for a top 5 finish.

In the 11 times Rory has competitively played Quail Hollow, he has missed the cut only once, with three wins and 8 top 10 finishes.

2023 Wells Fargo Championship Picks: Top 10 Finish | BetMGM

Tony Finau | +150 at BetMGM

Jason Day | +240 at BetMGM

Sahith Theegala | +333 at BetMGM

Winning in back to back weeks is easier said than done on tour but Tony Finau has been playing well enough to land in the top 10 and at plus money. He has finished in the top 25 in 10 of his 13 starts and has not missed a cut since November 2022.
