Last week’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play was amazing to watch but I can see, logistically, why this was the last year for the tournament. The winner, Sam Burns, played 119 holes of golf to get there, an exhausting and incredible amount of golf. The win was Sam’s first win of the season and fifth of his career.
This week, we are hanging around in the Lone Star State for the Valero Texas Open. This is the third of five stops in Texas this season and last opportunity for golfers, not already in the field, to win an invite to the Masters next week.

2023 Valero Texas Open
March 30-April 2, 2023
TPC San Antonio, San Antonio, TX
Purse: $8,900,000
FedExCup Points: 500
Defending Champ: JJ Spaun
The Valero Texas Open, which began in 1922, is the third longest running PGA Tour. The tournament is a 72 hole, stroke play, with a cut after 36 holes down to the top 65 players and ties.
Thursday is calling for rainy and windy conditions and the winds could continue to affect scores early Friday but should let up through the rest of the weekend. It is going to be a warm one, with temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s in the evening.
What Course Is the Valero Texas Open Held At?
The Valero Texas Open has been played at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio since the course opened in 2010. The course was designed by Greg Norman with the assistance of Sergio Garcia. There are not many water hazards on the course but it is littered with bunkers and fairways are lined with trees as the course namesake implies.
The Oak Course measures in at 7,438 par 72. It is one of the longest courses on tour and distance off the tee is certainly always welcome but will take a back seat to accuracy off the tee and ball striking this week.
Positional play will be at a premium this week and setting up approach shots will be imperative to go low. Putting is always a factor but will likely not be the deciding one this weekend.
The total purse of the 2023 Valero Texas Open is $8,900,000. The winner receives 500 FedEx Cup points, and a minimum of 24 Official World Golf Ranking points — additional Official World Golf Ranking points can be added based on the tournament’s strength of field.
The champion also receives a two season exemption on the PGA Tour, as well as inclusion to the 2023 Masters, 2023 PGA Championship, and the 2024 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

How many Golfers are in the 2023 Valero Texas Open?
The Valero Texas Open field has 144 golfers teeing it up. There are currently 11 players in the field who are invited to the Masters next week, meaning there are 133 who can win this week and score a last second invite to this year’s first major.
With the amount of golf played last week and the Masters just one week away, many of the top golfers will take this week off to prepare. The expected dropoff leaves eight of the top 50 Official World Golf Ranking players, teeing it up this week.
Who has the Best Odds of Winning the 2023 Valero Texas Open?
The current favorites to win the 2023 Valero Texas Open are Tyrrell Hatton (+1200), Rickie Fowler (+1800), Corey Conners (+2000) and Si Woo Kim (+2000).
It is hard not to pick a first time winner here to punch their ticket to the Masters next week but Si Woo Kim’s game sets up too well for this course. He is accurate off the tee and 22nd in Strokes Gained: Total.
In the 12 events he has played this year, he made the cut in 11 and finished top 25 in six of them. He has played this tournament six times finishing in the top 25 in four of them.
Rickie Fowler is currently on the outside looking in for the Masters next week and a win is the only way in. I am not sure he will be able to pull it off but the extra motivation should have him near the top come Sunday.
He has played well all season with seven top 25 finishes in the 11 events he has played. He is top 10 in Strokes Gained: Approach to Green so if he can stay consistent off the tee to setup approach and in, he should be in the hunt this weekend.
Taylor Montgomery is another golfer on the outside looking in for the Masters next week. He has played well enough to finish in the top 25 in nine of the 15 tournaments he has played this season. He is one of the best putters on tour and winning seems more of a when, not if question at this point.
I am not sure he has what it takes to win this week but if he can keep his drives out of trouble, his putting can carry him in any tournament.
