The PGA’s trip to Hilton Head provided yet another week of thrilling golf. Throughout the entire weekend, a number of players had their chance to claim the title before the tournament ultimately ended in a playoff. Jordan Spieth played great Sunday with 2 eagles and came up clutch, nearly chipping in on the final hole of the playoff to take home the plaid jacket.

This week, we are headed to the Big Easy for the Zurich Classic. Not to be out done by the plaid, the Zurich Classic will be handing over golf’s version of a title belt.

2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans

  • Dates: April 21-24, 2022
  • Course: TPC Louisiana in Avondale, Louisiana
  • Purse: $8.3 million
  • Defending Champs: Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith

How Does the Zurich Classic Work? Explaining Team Golf Format

The Zurich Classic is truly one of a kind. The tournament is played 20 minutes southwest of New Orleans and, much like the city, it has its own unique feature — and it is not the aforementioned title belt.

The field is composed of 80 two-player teams, with two different formats being played over the four-day tournament. In Rounds 1 and 3, four-ball is played, while Rounds 2 and 4 feature foursomes. Four-ball consists of the players on each team playing their own ball and the team recording the best of the two scores. Foursomes is a fancy word for alternate shot — one team member teeing off even numbered holes and the other owning odd numbered holes. The format was only recently changed in 2017, but has provided an exciting change of pace and playoff endings in two of the four years played. (COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 iteration of this tournament.)

The idea of the PGA calling the top available PGA players and asking them to choose another PGA TOUR-status player to team up with is truly the thing of dreams. It is what podcasts and golf forums are made of. It provides just enough of a taste of team play to get us through to the next Presidents or Ryder Cup.

What Course is the Zurich Classic Held At?

TPC Louisiana is located in the wetlands of the Mississippi River Delta and is massive, spanning more than 250 acres. Introduced to the golf world in 2004 and designed by the legendary Pete Dye, the course seems to blend with its surrounding environment so well that it is often hard to tell where the lines between it and the surrounding natural habitat end and begin.

It is dotted with bunkers of every shape and size, alongside huge ponds and waste bunkers. There will be a hazard in play for nearly every shot you see this weekend. It will require pin-point accuracy and quite a bit of strategy when it comes to playing as a team. There will be plenty of chances for scoring as the course has five sub-400 yard par 4s, one as low as 348.

Zurich Classic Field & Betting Odds

Looking over the field of two-player teams, it is hard not to imagine these tandems as the best of friends and think of how they may fare in a field day or beer olympics, but I digress.

The Scottie show resumes this week as the world No. 1 — Scottie Scheffler, has teamed up with Ryan Palmer. Palmer is a past winner and seems to only play with world No. 1s after teeing it up with Rahm for two years.

Two of the marquee pairs, seemingly picked by fans themselves, consist of players only found in the top 11: Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland comprise one duo, while Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are another top pair. Australians Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith will be defending their title and are among the favorites to win.

Keep in mind, this is not a normal format and will require teams to not only play well but play well together. If you are betting solely on team names, Team Hubba (Harold Varner III and Bubba Watson) will no doubt be the team to watch.
