Well, the Florida Swing is in the books and what a bizarre month it was. The players endured some of the toughest courses on the PGA schedule and did so amid grueling weather conditions. Scottie Scheffler has officially overtaken Jon Rahm as the world’s newest #1 player after his latest win at this weekend’s WGC-Dell Technologies.
The tour heads southwest from Austin to San Antonio, Texas this week for a final tune-up ahead of The Masters. This year marks the centennial anniversary of one of longest standing tournaments on tour – the Valero Texas Open.
Some added incentive for the winner of this year’s Valero Texas Open (if he hasn’t already qualified for the Masters) is that he will earn the final spot in next week’s field. The golfers teeing it up at this year’s milestone tournament includes many of the game’s top players:
Former FedEx Cup champions Rory McIlroy (+750) and Jordan Spieth (+1400) headline the field. Spieth will be attempting to become the last back-to-back winner since Zach Johnson in 2008-09.
Bryson DeChambeau (+2800) will also attempt to solidify his game after missing the past six weeks due to injury.
Hideki Matsuyama (+2000) joins the field after leaving early from the PLAYERS two weeks ago.
Abraham Ancer (+2000), Corey Conners (+1800), Tony Finau (+3000), & fan favorite Charley Hoffman (+5000) are just a few other notables among this year’s field.
TPC San Antonio (Oaks Course) is a Par 72, measuring at a whopping 7,522 yards. The Greg Norman/Sergio Garcia designed Oaks course will be playing host to the Valero Texas Open for the 13th time.
With less than 100 feet of elevation change, this course revels in its traditional design. Fairways are on the narrow side, however this rough is notoriously known as being flawed and relatively easy to navigate from. All greens/tees have had Poa Annua grass installed specifically for this event. With a purse of $7.9 million and another 500 FedExCup points on the line, we are surely in for a treat this weekend!
Valero Texas Open Past Champions:
Given the vast history of the Texas Open, some of the best all-time have hoisted this trophy. Including Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Lee Travino, Mark O’Meara & Arnold Palmer (who had a 3-peat in the early 1960’s). The Valero Texas Open has always boasted low scores and hasn’t had a winner above par since 1932!

Golfers & Stats to Watch for the Valero Texas Open:
Quality ball striking will be the epitome of success this week. Given that driving distance & accuracy off the tee aren’t overly important with that ‘dead rough’, this course shapes up as your stereotypical 2nd shot golf course. With slightly smaller than average greens and most of them being multi-tiered, technical greens -> approach becomes the quintessential statistic this week.
Considering the course is over 7,500 yards long and the GIR% (Greens in Regulation %) being proportionately low at the Oaks Course, there are two stats I’m giving more attention to this week. I will be drawn to players with good SG: ATG (Strokes Gained Around The Green) numbers since missed greens will be common across the board.. Finally, I’ll look towards Approach data from 175+ yards.
If you can have success at all three of these stats this week, as long as your putter isn’t made out of icicles, you should be right in contention throughout the weekend.
Corey Conners is my top play among betting favorites. He won his first PGA event here in 2019 (at 200-1 odds) and is coming into this week en fuego. The best ball striker in the field in numerous facets, he is a virtual lock for a Top 10, which you can get at +200 at BetMGM.
Keegan Bradleyhas turned his game upside down since leaving California. His approach game has always been a mainstay, but especially from long-range. Easily one of the best players not yet qualified for The Masters, you better believe he will be properly motivated. Bradley is currently +4000 at BetMGM to win outright.
Matthew NeSmith is a pure ball striker and has been flirting with contention all season. A constant among the top of all accuracy & approach statistics, if he ever runs into a hot putter – LOOK OUT! NeSmith is currently +8000 at BetMGM.
