2022 Travelers Championship Picks, Predictions & Best Bets

We came up just short of an outright win for the second week in a row with Will Zalatoris finishing as the runner-up in a major for the third time in his young career.

The U.S Open was an excellent tournament to watch that definitely lived up to the hype with all of the heavy hitters in contention right until the end on Sunday.

We just missed out on the outright win with Zalatoris, but the derivatives continued to deliver with Zalatoris cashing both a top-10 and top-20 ticket while Seamus Power cashed a nice top-20 +333 ticket as well.

After a successful event at Brookline, the PGA Tour now heads just 70 miles down the road to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship.

Course Overview

This week’s track is at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.

It is a par-70 that measures in at a meager 6,841 yards, making it one of the shortest courses on Tour.

Due to it being such a short course with two drivable par 4s and two very reachable par 5s, this week driving distance as opposed to driving accuracy will be more heavily weighted.

Of the last 22 champions at the Travelers, 12 have been in the top 13 in driving distance while only seven were in the top 10 in accuracy.

As is typical, approach play is still the most important stat this week with more narrow greens surrounded by numerous bunkers (as is typical of Pete Dye courses) so we will be targeting those players who are elite iron players and are among the tops in strokes gained on the approach.

After a grueling challenge last week where birdie was a great score on any hole, this week will be a low-scoring birdie fest where we anticipate the winner being around -20, so we will also be backing those players who excel at making birdie or better.

Statistics to Look At

It is going to take a combination of long and accurate driving, quality approach shots, low scoring, around-the-green play and bentgrass putting to contend this week.

For those reasons, the key metrics that our model is using to compile our portfolio this week are: SG: Ball Striking, Good Drives Gained, SG: Approach, birdie or better percentage, SG: Around-The-Green, SG: Par 4’s, Greens in Regulation, and SG: Total Pete Dye Designs.

2022 Travelers Championship Bets Outright Winner Picks, Odds

Patrick Cantlay | +1200 at DraftKings

Justin Thomas was our top choice out of the players at the top of the oddsboard this week, but with him withdrawing Wednesday morning we are changing this pick to Patrick Cantlay.

Cantlay is in excellent form — most recently finishing T14 in the U.S. Open and T3 at the Memorial, first at the Zurich and second at the Heritage before that.

Course fit-wise, he also excels in all of the categories we are prioritizing this week — most notably in birdie or better percentage where he is No. 3 and No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Total on Pete Dye designs.

His only win this season came at the Zurich Classic, which was played at TPC Louisiana (a Pete Dye design) and his second-best finish, his runner-up at the RBC Heritage, was another Pete Dye design.

The defending FedEx Cup champion needs more points to have a shot at retaining his title, and a win here at another Pete Dye design, his specialty, would go a long way in getting him closer to that.

Sam Burns | +1700 at FanDuel

Sam Burns has been a staple on these pages over the past few months and for good reason. Even though he let us down last week at the U.S. Open with a 76 on Sunday that pushed him out of the top 20 much to our chagrin — he has still been as consistent as they have come this season.

We had him to win at the Charles Schwab Challenge just under a month ago, which he did. Since then, he finished T4 at the Canadian Open and was in contention for his first major championship last week before the aforementioned uncharacteristically poor Sunday.

Burns has eight top-10 finishes in his 18 starts this season, including three wins. In this field, he ranks first in strokes gained on the approach, second in ball striking, second in birdie percentage and fifth in par-4 scoring average.

He has played at the Travelers Championship three times and has improved his finish each year (T43, T24, T13).

We look for this trend to continue and for him to finish in the top 10, which is our best bet of the week.

As long as he can avoid another Sunday collapse, he should be there right in contention to get his fourth win of the season.

Xander Schauffele | +1800 at DraftKings

Xander Schauffele is hard to trust with an outright ticket given that his last solo win came all of the way back in 2019, but he should have a great chance to contend and finally get off the schneid this week.

He is long and accurate off the tee, ranking seventh in this field in strokes gained tee-to-green. He is fifth in par-4 scoring average and 15th in strokes gained around the green, so he will be able to scramble well even when he inevitably misses a few greens. He is also a birdie machine, ranking fifth in birdie average.

Schauffele was in contention over the weekend at the U.S. Open and finished T14 finished in despite shooting 8-over par through his first 10 holes on Saturday. Before that, he hadn’t finished worse than 18th in any of his previous five tournaments, so we can expect him to contend in this competitive field as he typically does.

Jordan Spieth | +2200 at FanDuel

Jordan Spieth is coming off a disappointing T37 at the U.S. Open but it was a gritty performance considering he was dealing with a bad case of food poisoning all tournament.

He couldn’t have asked for a better tournament to get the bad taste out of his mouth as TPC River Highlands is a perfect course fit for him.

TPC River Highlands has small bunker-laden greens that demand accurate approach shots and elite around the green play — two elements that fit right into Spieth’s wheelhouse with him ranking first in strokes gained tee to green and around the green over his last 24 rounds.

It is no coincidence that he already has a Travelers win on his resume, having won here in 2017.

Spieth has a win and a runner-up this season on two courses that have very similar course comparisons to TPC River Highlands and there is tremendous value on him at +2200 — better odds than he was last week at the U.S. Open in a considerably weaker field.

If he can keep his solid tee-to-green numbers up and find a hot putter, he will be poised to grab his second win of the season.

Sungjae Im | +2800 at FanDuel

Sungjae Im is another familiar face on these pages but our results with him have been mostly disappointing — including last week at the U.S. Open where we were high on him but he let us down with a missed cut (by 1 stroke).

That said, as we saw last week with Matt Fitzpatrick, oftentimes the minute you give up on a golfer who you have been consistently backing all season is the moment they break through with a win, so we are willing to give Im another go this week at a course that fits his skill set beautifully.

He is No. 1 in the field in ball striking, strokes gained around the green, par-4 scoring average and scrambling. Only Burns and Schaffaule rank higher in our model’s course suitability ranking.

He has also been in great form prior to his missed cut last week at Brookline. Prior to that, he had five straight top-20 finishes that began with a T8 at Augusta National and continued with finishes of T21, T14, T15 and T10 taking him into the U.S. Open, where he uncharacteristically lost nearly a stroke per round on approach.

We expect him to get back into form this week and his ability to get hot and go low will come in handy at TPC River Highland where birdies in bunches will be required.

As long as he can avoid losing strokes on approach for the second consecutive week, he should be right in contention come Sunday.

Joaquin Niemann | +3500 at DraftKings

Joaquin Niemann already has one win this season at a birdie fest, when he finished at 19-under par at the Genesis back in February. His game is suited for a run at another win at TPC River Highlands.

He is third in the field in birdies or better gained and sixth in strokes gained tee-to-green and fifth in strokes gained around the green, so he will give himself plenty of birdie opportunities throughout the weekend. He is also in the top 10 in strokes gained total on Pete Dye designs, including a T5 in his first start at the Travelers back in 2019.

He is also sneaky long off the tee, ranking 19th in driving distance and 13th in par-4 scoring average, which is especially important this week with TPC River Highlands playing as a par-70 with two extra par-4s than normal.

Niemann’s only weakness has been his balky putter, but he has putted his best on bentgrass like he will be putting on this week, so if he can get hot with the flatstick like he did at Riviera at the Genesis, he will be in contention to get his second win of the season.

Other 2022 Travelers Championship Picks:

Rory McIlroy Outright Winner | +900 at Caesars

Rory McIlroy is playing about as well as you can heading into this week. If he can continue to putt and drive the ball with the same accuracy we saw last week, he will be again near the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday.

Joel Dahmen Top 10 Finish | +550 at Caesars

Joel Dahmen has been playing great golf and finished in the top 10 last week at The Country Club. His overall accuracy will set up nicely this week at the Travelers Championship.

Look for him to finish top 10 again this week.

Doug Ghim Top 20 Finish | +350 at Caesars

Doug Ghim has only two top-20 finishes this year, last week at the RBC Canadian Open and at the Players.

However, this course sets up for Ghim extremely well. He is not the longest off the tee, but he is extremely accurate. That will help this week.

While he is likely not contending, this seems like an easy pick for a top-20 finish.
