Golf is a game of inches and there is likely no one on tour who has embodied the phrase more this season, than Will Zalatoris.
Heading into the tournament last week, Zalatoris had yet to win on tour but was not for a lack of chances — he came up just short in multiple majors this year alone and was the highest Official World Golf Ranking player without a notch in the win column.
But when the playoff began Sunday, Zalatoris came up with two fortuitous breaks when a tree stopped his tee shot on the second playoff hole from going O.B. and impossibly his ball came to rest on the rock wall instead of bouncing into the water on the 3rd playoff hole, where he bogeyed and won the tournament. His first win also propelled him to first in the FedExCup standings heading into the second of three stops in the FedExCup Playoffs.
This week the Tour is making its debut trip to Delaware for the 2022 BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club.
2022 BMW Championship Event Information
Date: August 18-21, 2022
Course: Wilmington Country Club, Wilmington, Delaware
Purse: $15,000,000
Defending Champ: Patrick Cantlay
The BMW Championship is the second of three tournaments that compose the FedExCup Playoffs and the field has been cut from 125 down to the top 70 golfers in the standings.
The BMW Championship is a 72-hole, stroke-play tournament but unlike most tournaments, there will be no cut after 36 holes and the field will remain 70 through the weekend — barring any disqualifications or withdrawals. All golfers in the tournament this week can be propelled to the top 10 with a win so the stakes are as high as they come.
There is a slight chance of rain Sunday but otherwise should be a great weekend for golf as the weather should not play a major factor this week.
What Course Is the BMW Championship Held At?
The BMW Championship is held at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware and is the first time the course has hosted a PGA Tour event. Designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1959, the course is a 7,534-yard par 71, which is on the longer side of courses on tour this year so distance off the tee will certainly help.
However, the course may not play as long as the yardage book shows — a few holes have opportunities to cut some of the yardage out of the equation with a solid tee shot. As this is the first tournament held at this course, there is not much data on how it will be played but I expect plenty of birdies with only three par 4s measuring over 450 yards. Accuracy off the tee will be imperative to setting up players’ second shots into greens as the course is riddled with bunkers in landing areas and surrounding the greens.

How Many Golfers are in the 2022 BMW Championship?
The top 70 players in the FedExCup standings qualified for this week’s BMW Championship but only 68 will be teeing it up, with Cameron Smith (hip) and Tommy Fleetwood (personal) not playing. Despite the field’s lowered quantity, the quality is hardly lacking, consisting of nine of the top 10 and 19 of the top 20 Official World Golf Ranked players.
Who has the Best Odds of Winning the 2022 BMW Championship?
Current odds favorites to win the BMW Championship is Rory McIlroy (+1000), followed by Jon Rahm (+1200) and last week’s winner Will Zalatoris (+1400).
Justin Thomas is top five in strokes gained on approach to green as well as tee to green this year and both should play a major factor this week. Thomas did not finish where he wanted last week but was far from out of contention. If his putter can get hot, Thomas has a strong chance to take home the hardware this week.
No player is better on tour statistically, in strokes gained on approach to green, than Will Zalatoris. With the proverbial monkey off his back after bagging his first Tour win last week, Will has the game and now hardware to back it up. No one plays better when the stakes are highest and this week should be no different and Zalatoris should be a lock for a top 10 finish.
When Jon Rahm is playing his best golf, he can put the ball anywhere he wants. This is evident with his top five strokes gained off the tee and tee to green. If Rahm can get hot with the putter this week, his ball striking ability will have him in contention come Sunday.
