49ers Soon to be Old Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo listed as 4th QB on 49ers Depth Chart

Jimmy Garoppolo, also known as “the handsome one” in some circles, was listed as the fourth string quarterback on the 49ers depth chart.

Garoppolo, who was traded to the 49ers from the Patriots back in 2017, has been in limbo ever since the end of the NFL season.

The writing was on the wall with Garoppolo’s long-term future on the 49ers as soon as they traded multiple first round picks to trade up for and draft Trey Lance in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, at number three overall.

Despite the trade, Garoppolo started the majority of the season for the 49ers, bringing them all the way to the NFC Championship game and was one dropped interception away from his second Super Bowl appearance in three years.

But, Jimmy G struggled in key points throughout the season, and his limitations as a QB are clear. He misses too many throws, and is prone to poor decision making at what seems like the worst possible time.

This entire offseason, though, Garoppolo has been recovering from shoulder surgery. He underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder after the season, and has been on the mend since.

His agent came out in July and said that Garoppolo is “progressing well and on schedule,” and the expectation around the league is that he will still be traded by the end of August.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was stoic on the matter, simply stating that Garoppolo appeared on the 49ers depth chart “because he has to be.”

Even without saying much, Shanahan all but confirms that Garoppolo is unlikely to be on the 49ers this upcoming season, as all eyes await his likely trade.
